As i will soon be leaving on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to the North Carolina Raleigh Mission, i will not be keeping up/using this blog. Rather, as my parents have done with my brother Kurtis, who is currently on a mission in Chile, they will be running a missionary blog for me, where they will post letters and pictures that i send home/email. So if you would like to keep up with how i am doing in the mission field (starting October 28th of this year, yikes, only a month away), then follow the mission blog my parents will be running on my behalf. here is the link: www.eldersethmerrill.blogspot.com. Thank you all!

>> 15 THINGS A COPY STORE EMPLOYEE WON'T TELL YOU
thanks @ reader's digest for the idea.
these are the insider tips, the dirty little secrets of the copy store industry (ha. 'industry'. that makes it sound important).
1. Know what you want before you come. If you ask me my opinion about what you should do, I will either just agree with what you already said, or tell you "I don't know".
2. Don't make vague hand motions of "about the size" you want something. Give it to me in inches or percentages. I don't work in arm lengths and gestures.
3. If you are nice/patient, I might just end up giving you an unofficial 'Nice Customer' discount.
4. On the other hand, if you are mean/rude/impatient, i will price strictly and unforgivingly straight from the price sheet.
5. Don't try and tell me this place and that place has 2 cent copies: A) nowhere on earth will you find 2 cent copies, and B) if they do have them, what are you doing here?
6. We get pretty good at guessing what type of customer you will be before you even enter the store. What type of car you drive, what you look like, how many kids you have, and facial expressions are dead giveaways as to what we will be dealing with. not that you customers care, it's just fun for us.
7. Don't complain to me about how expensive you think something is, complain to my boss. Chances are i agree with you, and if there were anything i could do about it, i would do it. but i can't.
8. Usually the fastest way to get your job done is to wait in store until i finish it. i will feel under the gun, but not necessarily to the point of being stressed out, to get it done, so i won't waste time.
9. However, if there are 5 other customers in the store, be courteous and leave the job to be picked up later. that way i can get smaller jobs done first, which usually makes everything faster for everyone. and i won't be mad at you.
10. I would rather give you 3 or 4 copies for free than accept your twenty dollar bill and empty the register of all the small bills, but since i can't do that: if you give me a twenty dollar bill for something under a dollar, i will be mad at you.
11. the best customer is the customer we don't remember. if you want to be remembered, be picky, loud, and obnoxious, and expect us to do things on ridiculously short timetables. you will be famous among us employees in no time.
12. Go cheap. don't pay for expensive paper or color copies when it is just a basic flyer for church, neighborhood get-together, food drive reminders, etc. You and i both know they get tossed in the garbage after a day anyway. black and white copies work fine.
13. while it is super noble of you to try to fix a jam in the self-serve copy machine yourself, don't. just tell me and i will come fix it because you will probably make it worse, sorry.
14. forget social security numbers and credit cards numbers. We can tell a lot more about you from the family photos you give us to copy than from bills and receipts. we are not totally oblivious as to what we are copying, like you think we are. scary, huh? creepy, huh?
15. because we use the honor system for self service copies, you could probably rob us blind by lying about how many you made. but how could you live with yourself stealing 9 cent copies from a small-town copy store, you petty no-good thief? that's like telling kids santa isn't real. jesus is watching.

>> THINGS I HATE PART 3

- the abbreviation "frosh" for freshmen.
-the abbreviation "prez" for President (pres or Pres is acceptable).
-when people put a logo or an animal or an actor instead of an ACTUAL picture of themselves as a facebook profile picture.
-mother and son tandem who wear matching karate outfits in public (didn't know i hated it until i saw it for the first time at costco).
-panhandlers that are obviously not poor. example, someone who drove up to me in a brand new mazda3 and said they needed money for gas. example, when you can see the homeless man checking his cellphone behind his cardboard sign.
-secondhand smoke.
-secondhand garlic breath.
-secondhand seranade.
-customers who expect the impossible and are thoroughly surprised that we can't come through for them (for example, making a color copy from a black and white original).
-emo music. screamo music. and nickelback.
-swamp coolers.
-the background music at albertsons.
-frosted tips. besides being tacky and flat out ugly, they were last cool at least 7 or 8 years ago.
-people who spell ridiculous, "rediculous". they miss the irony of how ridiculous they look.
-having to drive a minivan. trying to sleep in a minivan. minivans.

>>BLOOD OF MAN FOLLOW-UP
blood of man is finally out. and i must say, mason jennings has done nothing but increased my man crush on him. this cd is amazing. he starts up right off the bat by spicing up the first song, "City of Ghosts", with a few f-bombs (not that i like that, just pointing it out). "pittsburgh" tells a sad story to a great tune. the standout on the album is the phenomenal "The Field", which tells about the pains of war on the parents of soldiers. it's a great song with raw vocals and blistering guitar. the other standouts on the cd is lighter "Tourist" and "Sunlight", the rather dark "Blood of man", and the surprisingly rock heavy "Ain't No Friend of Mine". Jennings has done it again, and his first cd recorded primarily with electric guitar is a great success. so different from his other albums, it doesn't have the feel of a brushfire album, but it is still classic mason.

>>PIXAR POWER RANKINGS
this is probably one of the toughest, most nerve wracking thing i've ever had to decide. but now that i've seen Up, and consequently, all the Pixar movies, i am going to rank the ten movies in order, from most favorite to least favorite. you can argue with me but i'm pretty sure i'm right. (note: it was so hard to decide these, that for all intents and purposes, 1 through 8 are pretty much interchangeable).

1. The Incredibles - the most action filled of them all, and still managed to pull off the humor and suspense. Classic superhero characters. this movie pretty much blew me away.
2. Finding Nemo - just a great story, and classic hilarious characters and situations. debatably the most quotable of all the pixars.
3. Toy Story 2 - better than the first i think, also managed to create action and drama even with a plot so seemingly juvenile (toys?). funny, also some great parody of older movies.
4. Up - in my opinion probably the most well made of all the movies, and the saddest and most character driven.
5. Monster's Inc. - super funny and super quotable, sad moments, best duo of characters, with Mike and Sully.
6. A Bug's Life - I loved this one as a kid, just a classic underdog tale, also pulls off some exciting and funny moments.
7. Toy Story - you can't deny how classic and revolutionary this one was for it's time, also considering this was their first one.
8. Ratatouille - the most beautiful looking of all of them, and while a bit slow at times, still had an excellent story and well crafted characters.
9. WALL-E - i was dissapointed by this movie. While i'll admit it's look and animation was fantastic, i found it boring and nauseatingly nostaligic. i fell asleep when i saw it in theaters.
10. Cars - dumb humor, and not enough heart to get by as a cute underdog story. Dissapointing to me by pixar standards. also, i don't know about having owen wilson as the lead voice, he can get annoying...

>>SKYMALL ALLSTARS
skymall was single handedly the best part of the flight home from dallas. enjoy
hm. comfortable? looks dead to me.
"this person is able to sleep comfortably in any seat! can you say the same? probably not...". this guy is either the envy of the flight, or the laughing stock. i'll bet on the latter.
mole repeller. this is just funny.
